Earthquakes and Seismic Hazard in Southern New Caledonia, Southwest Pacific

چکیده
We use 12 temporary and 9 permanent broadband seismometers that were operating for ∼400 days from October 2018 to November 2019 generate the first published earthquake catalog local magnitude function southern New Caledonia (SNC). Local hypocenters mostly have depths <20 km, but east of Hebrides-Vanuatu subduction zone they deepen >100 km. Our estimates ML 107 earthquakes in are consistently 1.1 units smaller than Mw mb over a range 4.5 7.5, as determined by United States Geological Survey. has 460 with Mw≥3.7 largest event SNC 3.8. Seismicity rates low, ML> 5 2.7 times more frequent elsewhere northern Australian plate. The probability an 50 years is 0.6 SNC. hazard damaging seismic shaking dominated moderate-magnitude earthquakes, rather large-magnitude events. predicted peak ground acceleration Nouméa at 10% exceedance 0.08 g. Residual analysis accelerations demonstrates currently overestimated new regionally specific motion prediction equations (GMPEs) needed. results highlight inadequacy current GMPEs footwall settings need additional studies this type setting.

Marine mammal strandings in the New Caledonia region, Southwest Pacific.
Four hundred twenty three marine mammals, in 72 stranding events, were recorded between 1877 and 2005 in New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, and Vanuatu in the southwest Pacific. Sixteen species were represented in this count, including: minke whale, Balaenoptera acutorostrata (1 single stranding), sei whale, B. borealis (1 single stranding), blue whale, B. musculus (1 single stranding), humpba...
متن کاملA New Genus and Species of Lizard (Reptilia: Scincidae) from New Caledonia, Southwest Pacific!
An unusual new lygosomine skink, Simiscincus aurantiacus Sadlier & Bauer, n. sp., is described from a single specimen collected in southern New Caledonia. This species is a member of the Eugongyius group of skinks, but is not readily assignable to any known genus. It has a number of derived characteristics that serve to distinguish it, the most notable of which is the highest number of premaxil...
متن کاملTwo New Species of the Genus Bavayia (Reptilia: Squamata: Diplodactylidae) from New Caledonia, Southwest Pacific!
Two new species of the diplodactylid gecko Bavayia are described from restricted areas within the main island of New Caledonia. Both species are characterized by small size, a single row of preanal pores, and distinctive dorsal color patterns. One species is known only from the endangered sclerophyll forest of the drier west coast of New Caledonia, where it was collected in the largest remainin...
متن کاملSeismic Hazard Estimate from Background Seismicity in Southern California
We analyzed the historical seismicity in southern California to develop a rational approach for calculating the seismic hazard from background seismicity of magnitude 6.5 or smaller. The basic assumption for the approach is that future earthquakes will be clustered spatially near locations of historical mainshocks of magnitudes equal to or greater than 4. We analyzed the declustered California ...
متن کاملEl Niño Southern Oscillation and Leptospirosis Outbreaks in New Caledonia
Leptospirosis is an important cause of seasonal outbreaks in New Caledonia and the tropics. Using time series derived from high-quality laboratory-based surveillance from 2000-2012, we evaluated whether climatic factors, including El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and meteorological conditions allow for the prediction of leptospirosis outbreaks in New Caledonia. We found that La Niña periods ...
